The Discovery Compass
We don't begin with solutions. We begin with the landscape.
A standalone advisory service that establishes where you are, where you need to go, and the terrain, constraints and decisions in between. It ends with the Atlas — a body of work you own and can act on, whoever does the building.
The method
We design with you, not for you.
Our discovery borrows from a long tradition in architecture and design. There's a word for it — we'll explain it once, then let it do its work.
- charrette/ʃəˈrɛt/ · noun
- An intensive, collaborative process in which the people affected by a design work alongside those shaping it. We listen, challenge, explore and progressively build understanding with you — rather than arriving with a predetermined answer and looking for a problem to attach it to.
- cartographythe craft behind it
- Making the enterprise landscape visible: systems, people, processes, data, dependencies, constraints, risks — and the hidden manual work quietly holding it all together. Complexity becomes something you can see, understand and navigate.
Three sessions, three weeks
Why not one long workshop?
Because the most useful detail rarely surfaces on the day. A conversation shakes something loose, and it arrives the next morning in the shower or the car park. We space the sessions so reflection — and your internal conversations — become part of the method.
-
Session 1 · Week 1
Discover
Current state and pain. Manual work, technical debt, stakeholder friction, operational symptoms — and your initial understanding of the problem.
24-hour follow-up: a structured capture, emerging themes, open questions and a worksheet for Session 2.
-
Session 2 · Week 2
Connect
Dependencies, causes and impact. We follow threads across systems, data, people, integrations and ownership, separating symptoms from causes.
24-hour follow-up and worksheet. Time to observe, consult and add missing context.
-
Session 3 · Week 3
Align
Validate understanding, close gaps, capture risk, cost and urgency, and agree priorities, sequencing and high-level solution pathways.
We consolidate the evidence and move into formal analysis.
-
Week 4
Deliver
The Atlas is presented: a polished map of your landscape and an actionable roadmap you can take to executives, IT, Procurement or any implementation partner.
The 24-hour follow-up
After every session you receive a concise written capture — what was discussed, our emerging interpretation, the unresolved questions and prompts for next time. You never walk into a session cold, and nothing you remember afterwards gets lost.
A judgement-free zone
Bring out your dead.
Every discovery includes a deliberate space to surface the ugly things: the fragile workbooks, the manual reconciliations, the abandoned integration, the Access database, the script nobody's game to touch.
None of it becomes surprise scope. It's captured, assessed and placed on a prioritised roadmap — so we solve today's agreed problem and make tomorrow's problems visible, without letting them leak into today.
The deliverable
The Compass belongs to the journey. The Atlas belongs to you.
Not a decorative slide deck. A usable map of the terrain we uncovered together: what exists, what matters, what connects, what's fragile, what needs a decision — and what a credible course forward looks like.

- iiPain-point register

Independent value
Useful even if we never build a thing.
The Discovery Compass is a complete engagement in its own right — not a disguised deposit on implementation. Once you have the Atlas, the next step is entirely yours.
Brief and decide
Brief executives and stakeholders, support a budget or business case, and decide what matters most with evidence rather than instinct.
Go to market
Give Procurement something concrete. Take the requirements to market for quotes and comparables, or brief your internal IT team.
Or build with us
If the work suits our specialism, we'll propose a fixed-price implementation. If it's better suited elsewhere, we'll say so — and, where it helps, introduce a trusted partner.
Take a bearing
Start with a conversation about where you are.
Thirty minutes, no obligation. We'll talk through the problem and whether a Discovery Compass is the right next step.
